Last night I got the obligatory texts and Facebook messages from friends wishing me the usual best wishes for 2010.
Reading some of the things people were saying on Facebook and [the more public] Twitter I do wonder who people are looking towards for best wishes and what they seem to hope for by saying goodbye to one year and into the next.
It reminds me of an old George Michael lyric from Waiting For That Day… “Like you say the magic numbers then just say goodbye to the stupid mistakes you made.”
Two thoughts about ‘big change’ from my own life spring to mind. The first is a book called The Luck Factor. Reading this knocked my path just enough for me to open my eyes to how lucky I actually was, and how I could create more luck. I look back now and credit that book for changing my journey.
The second is a learning from NLP – Cause and effect. Some people think things happen to them, looking to pass the blame in all directions if things don’t work out quite right. The fact is, we are all in control of our own destiny. Everything you are and will be is down to you and the way you react to the things around you.
My advice for anyone this year – if things aren’t how you want them, make a change before another year passes. We are all such clever, amazing ‘machines’ it would be a shame to waste that right?
Invest in yourself. You may be happy to go out and spend £500 on a new TV, or £100 on a new jacket, but how about the same again on a personal development course? In 2004 I invested £2,500 on an NLP course and, without doubt, it was the best money I have spent invested in my life.
I hope you make changes during 2010, if there are things for you to want to change. Notice them, even the small things – you’ll be amazed when you look back at the end of 2010 at how much you have already positively changed.
And that’s got to be a good thing, right?
